Preview:

Excluding the whole- Oliver villain ark thing (not gonna go into details you know what I mean), Emerald Fennel’s 2023 film ‘Saltburn’ explores the unique relationship between Oliver and Felix (and the rest of the Catton family); going into how influential background and status are when it comes to these connections, and how the middle and lower class are treated by the 1%.

Though in certain scenes it may seem like it, I don’t think Felix truly loved Oliver romantically. Although, Jacob Elordi states that he believed 'Felix truly felt like he loved Oliver'. Their relationship is very up to your own interpretation. 

I believe that Felix was naturally heterosexual, almost in a perfunctory way where - he sleeps with a lot of women but the emotional intimacy is reserved for the guys. 

Being a natural blue blooded social butterfly, he easily gets a lot of attention. But with most other men it may feel like there is some underlying hostility towards him. Especially since he is at such a sophisticated school surrounded by many similar to him that fit in that environment, Felix is seen by others (especially men) as competition. 

Felix reacts to Oliver with this intimacy and connection as a result of Oliver being one of the few guys in his life who seemingly doesn’t want to scrounge off of Felix’s wealth and advances. It creates this immediate closeness, to someone like Felix- a forbidden relationship.

Despite all this, even if Felix really did love Oliver at all:

Felix didn’t love Oliver half as much as Oliver loved him. When Felix found out Oliver had lied about his troubled background, Felix felt betrayed but in a way quickly moved on to having a good time at the party and even finding a girl to spend most of the night with. 

Inevitably,over time Felix would have gotten bored of Oliver because he saw him at the time as mere entertainment. Felix greatly liked Oliver for the reactions that Oliver gave him, and how he made Felix feel he was helping some financially poor person who came from a troubled family (Oliver stating his father had died from an overdose). Similar to how Felix’s family had taken in other needy people, such a Farleigh and Pamela.

Felix’ family would have eventually gotten bored and brushed Oliver off the same as Felix would have:

As a result of Felix’ background, carefree living and wealth, he treated people like phases he would inevitably get bored of, just to keep him entertained for the time being. 

Similarly, Oliver’s trauma and neediness was at the time only sordid entertainment for Felix’s family. This is proven so many times throughout the film. Such as:

• Pamela and Elspeth joking about Oliver putting his fingers down his mother’s throat as he stated she supposedly dealt with drug problems.

• Felix takes Oliver back to his (believed to be very troubled) family in an attempt to play as the saviour in Oliver’s life. 

Another example is Oliver’s extreme sexual advances towards Felix’s sister- Venetia and cousin- Farleigh. Trying to seem dominant and intimidating gave them a thrill in the moment, therefore a form of entertainment.

Oliver really sucked up to them but was let down and humbled at the party when no one even knew his name. Therefore proving how easily Oliver was removed and brushed off from the family and how unimportant he really was in the first place.

Similarly, the Catton family had taken in ‘Poor Dear Pamela’ because of her sad story, hiding from her dangerous ex boyfriend she supposedly met in rehab. Though had overnight quickly been kicked out having ‘overstayed her welcome’, fully knowing that she was on the run from a dangerous man. Later the family learning that she had either been killed or committed suicide, especially demonstrated through the mother’s reaction, showed that the family really cared very little for Pamela and only for their entertainment → acting as ‘saviours’ bringing the 99% into their wealthy carefree lifestyle.

None of these on Felix’s (or his family’s) part are acts of love (bringing him into his home and making him feel like a part of the family). Oliver was merely a temporary form of entertainment for him. This story just proves the tragedy of falling for a person like Felix, you will never be as important to them as they are to you. 

Oliver ‘loved’ Felix because he’s blue blooded, charismatic and unique. To Felix, Oliver was anything but one of a kind, he could have easily come across another struggling scholarship type who represented the ‘real’ struggles of the masses.

Even If Felix did love Oliver at all, inevitably this relationship would have become extremely one sided and eventually (like with Pamela) would have easily brushed Oliver off in the end; because Felix and his family are one of a kind and wanted Oliver for nothing more than their entertainment.

Means in Swedish: Gosig= warm/cuddly (awww ☹️)

I actually have this guy. His name is Sven and I love him.

Mr Peanut Butter (Bojack Horseman) but more probably plays Elden Ring and favourite food is jerky type vibes. (but he’s a good guy).

Name: Kramig

Means in Swedish: ‘(informal) huggy’ ←google says so

She is so sweet. Prolly does Judo or something. Deffo journals and loves the early 2000s brown and aqua colour combo.

My hands are so cold my fingers hesitate to fully press down each key.

Here are this list of men I can recall from 2023 (and early 2024) in no particular order:

Number 1 - Ryan Gosling

This is the first guy I thought of that the world obsessed over in 2023. You know from the Barbie movie and all that.

The people loved the Kenergy. So much so that he became associated with the famous ‘literally me’ list of characters. (possibly planning to speak of this topic in a later post.)

Number 2 - Josh Hutcherson

I added ‘Hutcherson’ to my computer’s dictionary to remove the red line under the word. Somehow ‘Gosling’ was already a word but.

Second half of 2023 this man was the world’s prized possession, and it came in 3 waves.

Wave 1: The FNAF movie. I thought it was never gonna happen. But it did, and Josh Hutcherson was the main character. Risen from his tomb after his Hunger Games role from 2012 to 2015 (i think).

Wave 2: Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Though this movie didn’t have Josh Hutcherson, it resulted in many watching the Hunger Games movies again where this man could bless our eyes once more.

Wave 3: Set during wave 1 and 2, is the infamous Josh Hutcherson Whistle edit from 2014. This thing became one of the new Rick Rolls, and it was on Jimmy Fallon, and it was really funny.

The og vid is so 2015 core. Like it hurts me to watch. It being edited with the exposure all the way up is crucial to achieve this era’s essence.

Number 3 - Chris Pratt

As well as Guardians of the Galaxy 3 being released in 2023, Chris Pratt strikes again in voicing every animated main character ever in the ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’.

And now as of 2024 we have yet another Garfield movie!! Though sadly instead of Bill Murray we get Chris Pratt.

When I first heard the new Garfield speak and he had the vocals of Chris Pratt, I was mad. But 4 months or so later I don’t care, and maybe in another universe I would say that it even suited Garfield. But not this one.

Number 4 - Jeremy Allan White

Is it a coincidence that both ‘Shameless’ and ‘The Bear’ are set in Chicago? I think not.

Even now I still see videos of people analysing his facial features.

Number 5 - Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi

Yeah not too much to say other than they were in ‘Salt burn’. I feel Jacob Elordi really switched up from doing all of ‘The Kissing Booth’ movies to doing Salt burn.

Nowadays their popularity still lingers. Jacob Elordi being famous for carrying around a purse i guess, and Barry Keoghan for having a cool accent and a weird face.

Number 6 - Timothée Chalamet

This man has been trending every year for way too long, but as of 2023 we were given Wonka. The musical no one asked for but I’m not mad about it.

I watched a video on this movie saying how Wonka had weirdly very strong Paddington vibes since they both had the same director. I can’t stop thinking of it as a Paddington alternate universe. Idk man.

If this wasn’t a musical they totally should’ve used Jeremy Allan White. Like Gene Wilder’s twin was right there and no one thought to take advantage of that.

In Conclusion, 2023 was a big year for the straight white men. These are all the most prominent ones I could think of there are probably more sorry.

#1 Flower Lamps

Huh?? Are you kidding me??

They are so perfect in every way ever. They remind me of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ for some reason. I actually first saw a flower lamp for the first time in the horror movie ‘It Follows’ (great movie btw concept is ingenious and f’d up), it was just sitting on the desk in like a 10 second scene and I haven’t stopped thinking about it (it’s been months and I can’t get it out of my head get out of my head).
